Studies show that artists look at colors and objects in a different ways. Instead of focusing on one point, artists eye scans the whole picture a mix of contours and defines color combinations. Artist Ekaterina Chernova shares how the color is seen from artist prospective.

When artist Ekaterina Chernova studied in the art school, tutors often noticed the colors that this aspiring artist used in her paintings. Ekaterina Chernova still prefers bright vivid combinations for her impressionist artworks. “Very bright colors is what is left in my memory after looking at say landscapes which I like to paint. For example a field could be all one green color on a photo, but in my imagination it is a rich assortment of juicy lime, cold bluish greens and olive shades.” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova.

Where do artist live? You probably heard of them living in urban areas as well as in the countryside, or by the sea. Why artist chose different locations and how it influences their art? Artists are usually free to move and they use this opportunity. Artist Ekaterina Chernova uses location as source of inspiration and learns from environment.
As well as artist influence the look and vibe of the place where they live, it also works the other way around to some degree. When artist Ekaterina Chernova lived in top floor apartments in central Auckland she usually painted people and urban scenes. “I used to go to the parties with my other artist friends and do live painting creating large works in one go. This was a lot of fun” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova. Urban jungle opened graffiti and street art world to the young artist. Ekaterina Chernova added so loved markers and spray paint to her painting materials, and they seemed to just naturally fit.

One of the most popular questions artists get is “How long did it take to paint?” Many artists get offended, and many answer that it took them the whole life taking in account years of practice and improving technique. Nevertheless, the viewer might only ask from pure curiosity. Artist Ekaterina Chernova shares how long it takes to paint a picture for her.

The most common answer would be “it depends” which is true. But lets get a couple of examples from practical experience of artist Ekaterina Chernova. She used different mediums and techniques and painted on sizes ranged from a postcard size to a wall mural. “It is also depends on how much time you can afford, because inspiration only lasts that long, and if you don’t finish the painting it gets abandoned and might never get finished” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova.

What makes you happy? Would you like to only do what you love? Artist Ekaterina Chernova took a challenge to make her hobby a full time profession. She quit her job with a promising career in IT business, and moved out of a big city to create art.

Ekaterina Chernova came from a conservative family, where art was looked down on as only a hobby. In 2000, she was introduced to traditional art classes in Russia, and for the next four years Ekaterina was completely absorbed by art studies. Ekaterina was spending all of her free time and weekends painting in the studio.

Ekaterina moved to New Zealand in 2009, and was so amazed and inspired with it’s natural beauty that she hasn’t stopped painting ever since. However, she chose a degree in business and IT, because it seemed more serious and practical. As the time was passing by, the urge to create did not go away, and corporate job was building up anxiousness and misery in Ekaterina.

In the old days artists decided it was a good idea to go outside with their easels and oil paint and create their paintings outside in the fields, parks, and gardens, just so they could capture and correctly depict light. The entire paintings were created on location, and this is how impressionism was born. Ekaterina Chernova is a contemporary artist, who travels with her lightweight easel and a backpack of paint.

“I really liked traveling by car or train as a kid, and was always fascinated with everything I see through the window. Now I take several hours to stay in a beautiful place, enjoy the view, and transform those feelings of joy and excitement onto canvas” - says artist Ekaterina Chernova.
